Home and music studio
A former church hall in east London reanimated as a home and studio for two musicians. The grandiose front is retained, repaired and surrounded with planting like a landscape folly. Inside, a single new volume houses a recording studio below and bedroom above, leaving a bright double-height kitchen and mezzanine space looking onto a rear patio garden.
ESL Studio 1
Event space and broadcast studio
Repurposing of a storage warehouse in the Midlands to create a national base for ESL, a leading e-sports producer. The main volume was turned into a fully-equipped production facility for live online broadcasting and serves as the UK’s first dedicated space for esports gaming events. A rare ‘sui generis’ planning permission was secured for this new type of venue, outside of established planning definitions.
Label base and recording studio
Inhabitation of one floor of a typical Berliner courtyard block to make a home for an independent music label. Two compact production suites sit behind a large, flexible lounge area used for working, meeting, songwriting and performance. Around this runs a backdrop of heavy curtains that expand and contract as needed, allowing users to fine tune the acoustics of the space.
Venue and nightclub
Conversion of a former printworks in Shoreditch into a multi-purpose venue and nightclub over three floors. At street level, an adaptable frontage gives flexibility to the cafe/bar and allows it to double as a secondary venue at night. A new concrete ‘plinth’ separates this acoustically from the basement club room. Circulation and servicing were threaded carefully through the building’s existing cast iron frame to allow each part of the venue to operate independently.
